Koninklijke Amarant Bakkers: A century of craftsmanship and sustainability

At Koninklijke Amarant Bakkers, they believe that sustainability begins with real action. For 100 years, they have been passionately baking the most delicious bread while committing to a better future for our planet. Together with Sonneveld, they have taken a new step by addressing their CO2 footprint.

A family with a vision

Started in a small bakery in Avenhorn, they have grown into a company with four bakeries across the Netherlands. As the fourth generation, Max and Renee Pater continue this tradition with a focus on innovation and sustainability.

Strong together

"Since 2005, we have been closely collaborating with Sonneveld, a partner who, like us, strives for sustainable and innovative solutions." "By sharing knowledge and being open to new ideas, we can work together more quickly and effectively towards a better future."

Sustainability in practice

Renee Pater: “We see a future in bread, but we know it has to be different—more sustainable and better for the environment.” That’s why we are taking big steps:

  • Plant-based small bread: In collaboration with Sonneveld, we are making our products more plant-based, achieving up to a 70% reduction in bread improvers.

  • Sustainable agriculture: We focus on improving the cultivation of our raw materials to make a real impact.

  • Transparency in CO2 footprint: As Renee indicates, “Sonneveld is working to provide insight into the CO2 footprint per raw material. They are one of the first suppliers to really map this out. It’s a great example of wanting to lead the way.”

Sharing knowledge is power

We believe that sharing knowledge is the key to success. By being transparent and collaborating, we not only strengthen our own business but also contribute to a more sustainable bakery industry. As Renee aptly puts it, “Sharing knowledge is power.”
